On Monday, April 21st the winner of the Vancouver
International Auto Show "VIP Karting Day", Kurtis Rock,
was taken to CART BC. This was
Kurtis' first time at CART BC and in a high performance 2 stroke kart.
Kurtis is a 17 year old student at Gladstone Secondary in Vancouver,
he works full time on the weekends. His name was picked from more
than 1100 entries. Kurtis' began this perfect day accompanied by Kevin
Glover on a track walk while David Warner prepped the kart. After
Kurtis' was suited-up it was time to have some fun. Kurtis' first
set of laps were around 80+ seconds with a restricted ROK engine.
By the end of four 20 lap sessions, plenty of coaching, spins and
lunch, Kurtis was down to 63 second lap times. Now it was time to
take out the restrictor and see if Kurtis could get under a minute.
After a 10 lap session, Kurtis got down to just under 61 seconds and
was brought in for some final coaching.
This would be Kurtis' last chance to get under a minute, which he
really wanted to accomplish before going home. So, out for 10 final
laps. It wasn't looking good after a big spin ontothe grass coming
out of turn 8, however, after being told to just relax and put it
all together, Kurtis' last lap was a 59.069! Well done!!!

Coastal Kart Racers would like to thank Don Choquer, President of
CART BC, for donating the track, and track manager, Stan Lawes for
donating his time, to help give Kurtis a day he will never forget.
